9th March 2010 - Thief Banned from all Churches
A prolific thief who repeatedly stole from local church charity boxes has been told that if he enters any religious building or shrine within York, he will be arrested and could face jail.
York Magistrates' Court heard that Paul James Harrison, 32, of no fixed address, has been stealing from church charity boxes for a number of years. Following convictions for theft offences he was made subject of a 2 year anti-social behaviour order.
PC Jon Hodgeon said "This is a fantastic example of how strong sanctions can be placed on offenders through partnership working. I have no doubt that this work will have a positive impact on the clergy and congregation of the chruches involved."
Amy Fenwick, ASB Coordinator for Safer York Partnership said "ASBOs are designed to curb behaviour that is detrimental to others. Everyone has the right to worship in churches without the fear of their contributions to church being stolen. Harrison was warned and offered help, but he chose to keep on stealing, as a result he has had his right to visit places of worship removed."
