Seasonal Security
With the onset of the holiday season and the better weather the York Crime Reduction and Community Watch are warning householders to be extra vigilant and to take early precautions to help prevent burglaries from happening.
Spring & Summer
In warm weather - remember:
• Close and lock all windows every evening or when you leave the room or the house
• Do not leave doors or windows open in areas where there is no one about
• Leave bedroom windows open at night only in occupied rooms above the ground floor. Ensure that the window will not open wide enough to allow entry
• Remember to property mark all valuable household items and register them on Immobilise
• Remember to close car windows and sunroofs when you leave and lock your car
Holidays
Thieves watch out for signs that people are away - and holidays provide a great opportunity for them. Be on your guard against spreading the news of your absence:
• Be careful not to use a label on the outside of suitcases giving your home address
• Cancel milk and newspapers (discreetly - don't shout it out in a shop full of people!)
• Only tell immediate neighbours, relatives and friends etc. that you are going away
• Get neighbours to remove any parcels from your doorstep and to watch over your property (leave a key if you can or details where to get one from for emergencies)
• Use a time switch for lights, radio etc. so that the house looks occupied
• DO NOT leave a hidden key anywhere
• Mow your lawn, lock up ladders and tools
