Immobitag & The Immobilise Property Register

Safer York Partnership recommend that you register your bike on IMMOBILISE property register and ideally fit an IMMOBITAG device linked to the register.

The IMMOBILISE register is used by North Yorkshire Police to reunite stolen goods to their owners and is a nationwide scheme, so if you bike is stolen and found by a police force elsewhere in the country, you stand a good chance of it being returned to you. Registration is free and for about £5 you can get a non-removable sticker for your bike to show it’s registered. You are also able to register other items of property with a serial number, and it is therefore useful for registering electronic goods and mobile phones. Many second hand dealers in the city now have access to IMMOBILISE so they can check if goods are stolen before taking them.

A slightly more expensive, but worthwhile, option is to have an electronic tag fitted to your bike. The IMMOBITAG is registered on the IMMOBILISE property register and is recommended by Safer York Partnership. The tag is tiny and fits inside the frame of your bike and is detectable by the police using a scanner.

North Yorkshire Police often run stop-checks of bikes at various points across the city and will use the scanner to check that bikes with tags fitted belong to the person riding them. Many stolen bikes have been detected using stop-check operations.

Safer York Partnership often work with local NYP Safer Neighbourhoods Teams to tag bikes for free at special events and many local ward committees fund a number of tags to be given away free each year, so keep your eyes peeled on the local press and City of York Council newsletters.
