hi there,

I've recently acquired a bike with one of them strips on that had the code BFH. I was wondering what that code means?

Yours Sincerely,
Chris Halsham

Hi Chris, basically it means that although your lock could be of better quality, you had used the lock well and your bike was secured to a permanent fixture. We would therefore advise that you invest in a better quality lock. Bike thieves target bikes with poor quality locks as they can easily be removed by either forcing open or cutting through.

Hi
Got one of your tags in York - code ECH; while it's a good scheme the assessment was poor. The 'C' suggested the lock was not used to best effect as it was only around the frame. Proper inspection would have shown that there were Pitlocks on the front and rear wheel, the saddle was on a cable lock so the bike was VERY secure even with just the frame locked. I live in East london so think I know how to lock a bike up securely!

Hi Kevin

Apologies that we missed the pitlocks on the front and rear wheels of your bike. I've passed your e-mail on to city centre policing team with a request that we look at bit more closely at bikes that at first glance appear to be insecure.

Sarah, thank you for your positive feedback regarding the cycle strips, and we hope that it was useful too you and that your bike is best secured against being being stolen.

Michael Frith - 5th July 2010 9:27am

Hello, got a strip with E+C on this afternoon.... thanks but i'm now confused. My lock is good but I'm not using it properly??! I lock it round the back wheel, frame, rack as shown in the 'where to lock your bike' and the rack signage. ??!!

Nikki, we are very happy to hear you do have a good quality lock, that you are locking your bike securely and you took your time to look into bike security. This may have been an oversight by the Police Officer/PCSO or they may be trying to alert you over another insecurity (such as a quick-release mechanism), please check through the below page on security but we hope you bike is secure and stays secure.

Found a yellow tag on my bike this morning after a jaunt around town. Nice to see the expensive lock i've got isn't up to much and after having it wrapped around a cycle frame in a cycle area the only thing any thief could have is the seat and front wheel. While i appreciate the gesture, a look at the cycle locks on the market is in order to stop people being fobbed off with a so called good lock that the police obviously think is naff.

I'm sorry if you feel that you have been given poor advice but pleased that you are in fact using a good quality lock. Our aim is to encourage people to invest in a good quality lock as many thefts occur where the lock has been forced or cut by the thief.

Tanya Lyon - 30th June 2010 2:28pm

nice to know that you're helping us to keep our bikes safe. My cycle strip was code E/F which makes me happy about my choice of locks and confident about using them in right way. Thanks

Christine Gray - 8th June 2010 5:43pm

Thank you again for your positive feedback.

Tanya Lyon - 10th June 2010 11:48am

My husband and I were intrigued to find out what the code meant and are pleased to see that we were being congratulated for the quality and use of the lock! We also felt safer just from seeing the yellow NY Police bands as it reassured us that there was an active police presence re takling bike theft in York. Keep up the good work. Oh, I did notice that the bikes next to JJB Sports and the Church (opposite Bettys, behind the florists) had not been tagged, and from past experience lots of bikes are pinched from there.

Ruth Holmes - 4th June 2010 4:53pm

Thank you for your positive feedback. It is always useful to hear what members of the public think about our initiatives. I will pass on your comments re. cycles parked near JJB Sports to the city centre Safer Neighbourhoods Team.
