Tackling Catalytic Converter Theft

Safer York Partnership is currently coordinating work between North Yorkshire Police, City of York Council, local Auto Dealerships and Scrap Metal dealers to reduce catalytic converter theft.

Under Operation Bonafide, local auto dealerships are donating the use of their ramps to allow NYP Special Constables to security mark catalytic converters by etching and painting.  Vehicle owners are also given crime prevention advice and a window sticker indicating their 'Cat is Marked'.

Scrap metal dealers have also been visited and requested to display posters stating that they are required to report any catalytic converter presented to them that is marked in this way (unless robust proof of ownership is provided) or where there is evidence that such markings have been removed.

North Yorkshire Police are regularly visiting scrap dealers.  Any dealer found in breach will be prosecuted and their licence to trade removed by City of York Council.

The first security marking event, targeting previous victims,  is being held on Saturday 18th February at North Eastern Tyres and Auto, Clifton Moor.  Future events will be planned.
