How it Works in York and Who is Involved

Miss Dorothy is funded primarily by the Safer York Partnership. At the start of the project it was felt that it was crucial for Education to be involved, therefore support was sought at strategic level, and some additional funding was brought in to the project.

So far, there have been three training events for teachers and head teachers. Police Training has been carried out by Miss Dorothy so Police Officers and PCSOs can deliver with the teachers key safety messages from lessons packs that have been specifically designed.

Miss Dorothy is now a feature at Crucial Crew, an event that all Year 6 children attend which explains to children some key messages about how our actions have consequences and what to do in emergency situations.

The Miss Dorothy programme has been taken up by 27 out of the 54 Primary Schools in York. The pilot areas for this project were Clifton, Clifton Without, Skelton and Rawcliffe wards and the project continues to be rolled out across the city.

The key partners involved in this project have been :

  • Safer York Partnership
  • North Yorkshire Police
  • IDAS – Independent Domestic Abuse Services (Formerly York Women’s Aid)
  • NSPCC
  • City Of York Safeguarding Board.
  • Learning Culture and Children’s Services.
  • North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service

Since the York project is part of a wider national agenda, evaluation has been carried out Nationally by the Cabinet Office. The important messages from this evaluation are:

  • 100% of Schools said this resource should be mainstreamed and accessible to every school.
  • 90% of teachers said they had noticed a significant change in behaviour, those behaviours being mutual respect, openness, and self-confidence.
  • 50% of Teachers said they would have liked the training to be longer.
