Dispersal Powers
Dispersal powers are used in public spaces where groups gather and intimidate and harass the public. Once an area has been designated a dispersal area then police can direct groups of two or more people to leave if they are causing a nuisance, and if they don't live in the area. They may be excluded from the area for up to 24 hours. The area can be designated for up to 6 months and will be considered if other measures have failed to solve the problem.
At present there is a dispersal in place for an area of Fishergate in York. To the right is a map of this such zone.
Direction to Leave
Uniformed police officers can direct any person over 16 years old to leave an area, if the officer believes that they may cause or contribute to alcohol related disorder. The officer can direct this person to leave a specific area for up to 48 hours.
