Architectural Liason Officer Role

The Safer York Partnership has a Police ALO working as part of their team. This officer covers the York area and works closely with the local planning authority on all issues of community safety and ‘designing out crime’ in the built environment. His role is to ensure that the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) are reflected in major planning application decisions. This may include developers seeking the Secured By Design Award (SBD) www.securedbydesign.com which recognises those achieving approved minimum standards of security. A further part of this initiative includes the ParkMark - Safer Parking Award Scheme which encourages those responsible to improve security and safety standards.

In respect of planning applications, the ALO will visit the proposed site, conduct a crime risk assessment, liaise with members of the development team to provide advice and submit a formal response back to the planning authority in which detailed comment and observation is made. Planning conditions are likely to be asked for to ensure that the scheme progresses in accordance with recognised and effective designing out crime principles.

In some circumstances North Yorkshire Police may object to a planning application on the basis that it has not adequately addressed crime prevention, that it is contrary to adopted planning policy or because we have significant concerns about the implication of a proposal on community safety.
