About Safer York Partnership

What is it?

Safer York Partnership brings together organisations and people who can make a difference in the city’s fight against crime.

Why was it set up?

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 tasked all Councils throughout the UK to set up a Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) to work with others to broaden responsibility for community safety and reduce crime and disorder. Each Partnership was charged with conducting an audit of crime, including local consultation, and subsequently developing a Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy (CDRS) to address the priorities that the Audit showed. Crime Audits must be undertaken every three years to ensure that local strategies and action plans remain valid and focused. Section 17 of the act stipulated the requirement for local authorities to ‘mainstream’ crime reduction, which means that every council department must not only consider crime and disorder implications whilst conducting their core functions, but work with others to tackle and resolve the issues.

York’s response to the Crime and Disorder Act was to establish Safer York Partnership (SYP) in 1998.
