18th August 2010 - Police crack down on cycling offences
Police from the city centre Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be taking a firm stand against those caught committing cycling offences in York’s pedestrian area over the next few weeks.
Following complaints from members of the public about the hazards of trying to dodge cyclists flouting the pedestrian only rules in York’s shopping area, the SNT will be taking action to deal with those who break the law.
Temporary Sergeant Ian Wilkinson, Community Safety Sergeant, said “York is extremely crowded during the summer months. Much of the city is a pedestrian only area during the hours of 11am and 4pm to ensure public safety for those who are on foot shopping. However, a small number of inconsiderate cyclists refuse to get off and walk or seek alternative routes. This week we will begin a series of campaigns to clamp down on this and issuing fixed penalty notices to those individuals caught cycling in the pedestrian area. ”
Cyclists caught on their bikes in the pedestrian area will be issued with a fixed penalty notice that carries a £30 fine.
